Namaste & Welcome

deZengo is about the "Art of Beautiful Living." Finding beauty in the strangest places and oddest objects. Being open to the most important discovery of our life--SELF DISCOVERY. It is my hope that as we heal our own pains, angers, fears, regrets...we can begin to heal the world.

As we continue to work independently and interdependently something wonderful takes place. Unity! Creation through collaboration. Life is not meant to be lived through the blinders of fear - step out of your comfort zone and into the NamaZone. Truly we care and our efforts to unite different cultures, backgrounds, genres, and yoga styles together is an enormous undertaking, but someone had to do it. We seek to create bridges between the different practices for those who seek truth and live love.

Pull up a cyber chair, sip some tea and enjoy a relaxing afternoon with Bonsai Yoga at their online hub or hang around here with the deZengo folks. We double down dog dare you!

LIFE ... the Perfect Teacher

Your Perfect Teacher

Life

All the situations in our lives, from the insignificant to the major, teach us exactly what we need to be learning.

Many of us long to find a spiritual teacher or guru. We may feel unsure of how to practice our spirituality without one, or we may long for someone who has attained a higher level of insight to lead the way for us. Some of us have been looking for years to no avail and feel frustrated and even lost. The good news is that the greatest teacher you could ever want is always with you—that is your life.

The people and situations we encounter every day have much to teach us when we are open to receiving their wisdom. Often we don’t recognize our teachers because they may not look or act like our idea of a guru, yet they may embody great wisdom. In addition, some people teach us by showing us what we don’t want to do. All the situations in our lives, from the insignificant to the major, conspire to teach us exactly what we need to be learning at any given time. Patience, compassion, perseverance, honesty, letting go—all these are covered in the classroom of the teacher that is your life.

We can help ourselves to remember this perfect teacher each day with a few simple words. Each morning we might find a moment to say, “I acknowledge and honor the teacher that is my life. May I be wise enough to recognize the teachers and lessons that I encounter today, and may I be open to receiving their wisdom.” We might also take some time each day to consider what our lives are trying to teach us at this time. A difficult phase in your relationship with your child may be teaching you to let go. The homeless person you see every day may be showing you the boundaries of your compassion and generosity. A spate of lost items may be asking you to be more present to physical reality. Trust your intuition on the nature of the lesson at hand, work at your own pace, and ask as many questions as you want. Your life has all the answers.

Yarn Therapist - Nov 2011 : EcoFriendly Challenge

Eco-Challenge
BE the Light!
"Save the Earth" has almost become a cliche' these days and I am saddened by this. All too often when something becomes so well known it ends up being tossed to the "Useless Info" department that resides in the human brain.

Well, Yarn Therapy, in conjuction with SACRED Space Studio, is out to change all that. Eco-Challenge 2011-2012 is a fun way to learn some new skills that will help planet earth and your wallet at the same time. It is overwhelming when we think of how much damage has been inflicted upon the planet and the huge responsibility it is to reverse the damage we have done.

However, small steps and changes in habits, thoughts and behavior can have a big impact, especially when we work together. There are people out there everywhere coming up with useful and innovative ideas on how to live more responsibly with regard to the earth and each other and we want to hear them! But not only do we want to hear them- we want YOU to do them and see how easy and fun it can be to live a healthier, more eco-friendly life. Along the way there will be prizes offered for various weekly challenges to make this fun and exciting.

Consider joining us!

Go to our FaceBook page and click the “LIKE” button! Then prepare, the first challenge has been issued!

Are YOU ready?

OM Times November 2011: Health & Wellness Editorial - BCABPP

OM Times Health & Wellness Editorial - BCABPP

It’s hard to believe another month has come and gone! Where oh where does the time go when you’re having fun? Technically, time is the same whether we enjoy it or not, so why not embrace each moment as an adventure to create fun or at least something positive from each experience? Being conscious and aware in each moment we are granted an opportunity to take those metaphorical “lemons” and create “lemonade!” Some situations are easier to recognize than others, but I believe that we have the ability to create change with (IN) that ultimately create change that ripples (OUT)ward.

What if you were told you had breast cancer? Would you be able to stop in that moment and breath, rather than allow fear to run rampant? Looking for a way to not only get through it, but rise above it? There is no doubt we all have the potential, but until tested we never know our inner strength and in what way the creative, divine, universal force can masterfully use “each” situation to create something beautiful and inspirational.

Recently I had the pleasure to connect virtually with a group of visionary artists, photographer(s), and breast cancer survivors working on an ARTivism Project that I fell in love with. The dots leading up to the connection are mildly entertaining, but the story caught my attention and inspired me. Unless you knew my previous 50 years you cannot appreciate the distance beyond my “box” I have walked. My navigational beacon (heart) directs me to the project.

What I continue to see are individuals committed to using their pain & adversity to create something amazing! The Breast Cancer Awareness Body Paint Project (BCABPP) incorporates the survivor’s story and message into the painting. What makes the project so unique is the human canvas being used. Real women with real scars and real stories have the opportunity to share their story of survival through a beautiful work of art. Currently, the project is being censored on Facebook as offensive or pornographic in nature. You will have the opportunity to read more about this project a little further in the magazine and make your own determination.

This month look for your opportunity. When you find the situation that you feel is impossible to create something positive from remember that in changing your perception of the world, you change the world. ~deZengo

Facebook Censorship for BCABPP Challenged

Breast Cancer Awareness Body Painting Project BCABPP

Stop Censorship on Facebook

It has come to our attention that Facebook is now censoring images being posted for this project. I have used social media long enough to know that they censor who and want they want.  I see pornographic material on there daily.  I see women using their bodies to illicit business in their avatar usage.  What I want to know is HOW can they censor a project that uses the human canvas and creates ART - when they allow nude paintings and other photos to be shown?  I am positive that our children see more T & A while surfing through Facebook (and other online venues), as well as just turning on the television, opening a magazine or going to a beach!   To sign our petition in support of the project and against facebook censorship on the : Care2 Petition Site

About the project ....

Resident Fuddy Duddy:

I am the resident fuddy duddy.  I do not support using a woman's body to illicit sexual response from the viewing end, I find that distasteful and part of the problem with "dehumanizing women" in the world view.  If you look at Playboy or other magazines ... they are called ===> "bunnies?"  I don't want to be soft fluffy bunny for your viewing pleasure!  I want to be a survivor who stands up for what I believe in and support!

The BCABPP project selected women from around the globe.  Different sizes, shapes and stories and provided them an outlet to feel beautiful again and use their voice to raise awareness & gain support for PREVENTION of this disease.

This is from the creator of the project, who speaks out for the women who do not have a voice!
Today - 10.20.11

We NEED YOU RIGHT NOW.... FACEBOOK HAS AGAIN CENSORED AND DELETED FIVE SURVIVOR IMAGES - During Breast Cancer Awareness Month no less. Does anyone have press or news contacts? This CENSORSHIP IS UNACCEPTABLE. They deleted images of women with no nipples and the latest image where her breasts are entirely covered!!! PLEASE HELP AND ALSO SIGN OUR PETITION!!!

I believe these survivor images are all in good taste and I have created them with the idea of them being shown in public spaces - spaces even where children would see them. Unfortunately, in our increasingly PC and corporate safe, sometimes ultra-conservative world we are running into issues with these selfless inspiring survivor images being either outright CENSORED and removed or Blocked in some other manner making it unnecessarily difficult for them to be seen.

They have been safe enough for magazine covers and primetime TV broadcast (so far by a PBS program, CNN en Español, Univision and Telemundo just to name a few.

This is not just nudity for a cause - it's bodies covered in paint. It is no more revealing then a silk blouse on a cold day. Is just the bump of a nipple enough to cause such a stir??? Some of the women have no nipple reconstruction at all.

These women deserve to be supported and applauded for coming forth to participate in such a vulnerable way - NOT to be made to feel that they did something that they should need to hide or conceal or be ashamed of. SHAME ON YOU FACEBOOK AND FLICKR.

If you support this project and are offended by it's CENSORSHIP and not by it's natural human beauty please sign and comment below. :-)

thank you for your support...

Michael

So far 25 brave and incredible women have selflessly stepped forward and been painted for the project.

I may be the creator but these SURVIVORS are the project. Everything is a true collaboration of the women the body painter(s) and my work as well. All of it then shared and appreciated by the people it touches. Every link in the chain is important :-)

Cancerland - We are NOT Alone, by Kathleen Kanavos

We Are Not Alone!

by Kathleen Kanavos

Cancer is Humbling.  It’s guaranteed to knock you down with its series of crises, beginning with discovery and continuing through treatment, often with no end in sight.  Upon hearing a cancer diagnosis, many people feel devastated, confused and alone. Nothing is farther from the truth:  Even in our darkest hour—we are never alone!

I know because I am a two-time, twelve-year, stage-four breast cancer survivor who found out the hard way that not all cancers are discovered by conventional medical tests.

I didn’t believe the test results that came back “negative for cancer.” My dreams told me the physicians and tests had missed the 2.1cm tumor that was Stage Two invasive ductal carcinoma. Five years later, they told me my doctors  had missed a second breast cancer that was lobular stage four.

My persistent self-advocating with the unwavering help of spiritual guides in my dreams finally resulted in convincing my doctor to perform exploratory surgery on a spot that he couldn’t feel, the tests didn’t show existed,  was against hospital policy, and his better judgment.  The result was a diagnosis that shocked the medical community and changed my life, forever.

Have you ever had a gut instinct that disagreed with scientific facts, and then found that your intuition was correct and the facts wrong?     I let my dreams guide me, and then used modern medical tests to validate what those dreams said. Listen, and then validate!

One of my biggest and most pressing challenges throughout my ordeal was deciding whom to trust—my doctors and their conventional results, or my dreams and their spiritual messages.  I decided to listen to both! I requested different procedures and medical tests and cross-checked them against my guided information as I ran the race of life against time.

Fortunately, I was under the watchful eye of something even wiser than my learned physicians. I was under the protection of spiritual-guides from the other side who were at odds with my doctors and the tests on which they relied.

My story is an alternative to ignoring our intuition in favor of science or ignoring science in favor of intuition.  I learned that the best way to survive any health crisis is to mix intuition and science and then cross-check them against each other for answers that are indisputably correct.

In order to effectively battle illness, we must get in touch with our inner-selves and work together toward the goal of survival by using everything available to us. By searching within ourselves through dreams, meditation or prayer, we will find our own set of answers to any challenge.

I remember the exact moment I received validation of my dreams, and spiritual guides. “Pathology didn’t like what they saw when they cut the tumor open,” my surgeon said after closing the privacy curtain behind him.

“So, is it cancer?” I asked, while holding fast to the hospital gurney, bracing myself for the answer I already suspected and feared.

“Yes, I’m sorry. I’ll refer you to someone else now, a specialist.” Thus began my Alice in Wonderland’s steady decent down the dark rabbit hole of Cancerland.

My dreams had been right.  With my surgeon’s words, the first shot of my ensuing battle had been fired, and it was not a warning shot across my bow, it was point-blank into my breast. I glanced down at my painful wound and wept with grief and joy.

My guides in dreams had saved my life. I was not alone.

Most of us will never hear the words, “Your biopsy came back positive – it was malignant!”  However, chances are that someone in your circle of family or friends will be affected by this deadly and indiscriminate disease.  Hopefully, you will revisit this article for suggestions as to how Yoga benefits an individual (before, during and after) through each stage of treatment!

Yoga Before

Upon notification that cancer has been detected and prior to any treatment regime is the perfect time to begin a yoga practice, if not already included into your daily routine.   Without a doubt there will be added anxieties and fears to address.  However, one of the most beneficial things you can do for your mind & body is to stay in a calm.   In yoga, it is called meditation and it allows us to focus and prepare.

Yoga During

Depending on the type of cancer or treatments required, your daily practice might need to be modified but not forgotten.  When you feel the worst and the weakest, can be the best time for yoga.  Don’t be afraid to push your body a little!  Perhaps you can   pick one asana (pose) and build up your strength gradually versus doing an entire class.  The breathing exercises are beneficial at every stage of life or cancer.  Recent surveys suggest, doing yoga while going through cancer treatments  assists with insomnia that accompanies  many of the chemotherapy drugs,  physical aches and pains, as well as an overall sense of well being.

Yoga After

During the coming months be gentle with yourself and realize you have just fought a battle for LIFE.  Your life!  As a survivor you have so much to look forward to and yoga will accommodate and grow with you.  If you continue this practice, you will find yourself able to  deal with all aspects of life from a renewed perspective and place of love.  Yoga is a lifestyle that incorporates conscious intentions and thought into all aspects.  If you have made it this far, there is no doubt you are on the road to your healthy life.  If you can “see it,” you can “be it” and yoga can help you get there with regards to wellness.

Breast Cancer Awareness Body Painting Submission / Questionnaire

I. Why I Wish to Participate

Dear BCABPP Team,

Upon first glance at your project, I immediately felt drawn to it, and believe there was no mistake it came across my cyber-plate. I am a breast cancer survivor, a yogini and an activist, as well as the Health & Wellness Editor for OM Times Magazine (www.OMtimes.com).

In my role as editor, part of my job is to find stories of inspiration and expose simple changes that create a huge impact in our life! While our goal is to move humanity toward PREVENTION not treatment, we must deal with the very real impact of breast cancer on not only the women who fight the disease, but also on our society as a whole.

As a survivor, I know first hand some of the self esteem issues that women go through, and the staggering number who are actually abandoned upon a diagnosis of breast cancer. My story of true inner and outer change begins with the diagnosis of advanced, stage III, multiple tumors - invasive ductal carcinoma - commonly known as breast cancer. One emergency radical mastectomy and several surgeries later, I was forced to represent myself in court for 3 of the 4 years of my divorce, which was also taking place during that time. Although I completed my degree, worked two jobs, and raised two teenage boys alone, my heart was broken and my body responded through the manifestation of a physical disease.

It’s difficult to admit how many nights I cried myself to sleep and prayed for death, believing that my children would be better off with their father, and that there was nothing to live for without “love.”

Just prior to the diagnosis, I was introduced to yoga and began an adventure toward self discovery and responsibility. Much of my life previously I had felt like a victim without direction or hope for improvement. I stayed in unhealthy situations out of fear and co-dependence. I refused to acknowledge the “signs” that were given and I held on even tighter to a dream that was based upon an illusion.

After years of heartache and confusion, trying to deal with what felt like a lifetime of mistakes without a compass, my body responded with a disease that was up close and personal to my heart. For me, breast cancer was an awakening, a time out to evaluate what was important and one of the best things that happened to me. It allowed and provoked me to push my boundaries, and begin to recognize an inner strength I didn’t realize I possessed.

In the end, I have learned more about myself and life going through this experience than all the previous years combined. I realized that each day was a gift! There is no guarantee from moment to moment, and in the midst of the treatments I remember being happy just to be alive for one more day. The simple pleasure of having the energy to walk up a small hill and sit in the sun, and the slow process of incorporating my yoga practice back into my life brought tears of joy!

I promised myself and my creator that if I did survive, I would create something beautiful from this pain. I would look for the lessons in adversity and accept them with gratitude. As a breast cancer survivor I am left with a physical scar, but that has never been the challenge for me.

My frustration lies within the clothing industry that does not accommodate anyone that does not “fit” into the nice neat “box”. I teach yoga, zumba and am involved in many other athletic activities and can find nothing that would accommodate my less than perfect body. I have the feeling that I am “abnormal” because I refuse to go through more surgeries just to fit into a societal mould of what a “sexy” woman is “supposed” to look like. I researched them, and each surgical procedure left me with serious concerns. I preferred to be able to “do the activities I wanted” versus going through more painful surgeries, thousands of dollars, and ending up with limited mobility.

I still feel sexy, and would like to show other women that losing a breast (or two) does not impact your ability to look and feel beautiful. What you are doing with the body painting is in perfect alignment with a clothing line we are launching to elevate our survivors through conscious designs that emphasize a woman’s natural beauty – not focus on what is missing.

II. My Thoughts on Designs or Themes

I have gone through so many battles - many while I was in the middle of dealing with breast cancer. I would love to bring yoga, healing, and personal responsibility into any design I would represent. To use my body, as I mentioned earlier (I’m generally very private about all aspects of my body) but this is such an incredible opportunity to demonstrate that “sexy” is a state of mind, and to give hope to every woman! It is within our reach to not only heal our body - through yoga we can connect to our inner divine self and learn to love and respect our inner “goddess”!

I am attaching a few photos that were taken to accompany this application for review. Thank you in advance for everything you and your team are doing to bring awareness to this disease, and to help women of all sizes, shapes, and colors feel beautiful and empowered!

Owning Your Tendencies - Understanding All Sides

Let Your Spirit Soar

Looking at only one side of our life can make us blind to the many other ways of looking at our situation.

Whenever we examine our lives, we examine them from a particular side or angle. Most of us tend to favor one side over the others. For example, we may tend to look at things from an emotional perspective rather than a financial perspective, or we may prefer to think in terms of details rather than the big picture, or vice versa. To a certain degree, this is not a problem, and these tendencies add color to our individual personalities. However, they can also make us one-sided, blind to the many other ways of looking at our situation. Even if we have decided that we are most happy when we focus on one particular side of things, it is always worth exploring the other sides. When we do, we become well rounded, more understanding of other viewpoints, and even more solid in our own.

Perhaps you are a person who tends to see your life in terms of your spiritual well-being. As a result, other concerns such as financial comfort or social standing may not be prominent in your mind as you make decisions. However, taking just a moment to consider those angles will help you in several ways. One, it will enable you to see more clearly what your priorities are and how they influence your life situation. Two, it will enhance your sense of confidence, because you will see your situation from all sides, even as you choose one. And three, it will help you communicate with others about who you are and what you are doing, because you will come from a place of understanding that your own biases and tendencies are unique as are theirs.

Most of us instinctively come at things from a particular angle, and in many cases this is the right way for us. Still, understanding the other angles only strengthens us. When we look at our lives from all sides, we shed light on the big picture, giving ourselves access to many points of view and highlighting more clearly the one we have chosen to take.
